We strive to help people around Kolkata, West Bengal
After a long and complicated process that lasted close to three years, Uddyom has been recognized by the Indian tax authorities as a charitable not-for-profit. Under section 80G of the tax code, donations to Uddyom are now tax deductible.
September 27, 2015 saw the rebirth of Uddyom, a rebirth so grand that it exceeded all our expectations. We had gone dormant to strategically think about how best to invest our energy and resources. The first couple of years of operational experience had taught us a lot about organizations, people, and the needs of the society we wish to serve. A volunteer organization went into voluntary hibernation to digest this experience and knowledge and figure out the most effective way of creating a sustainable and impactful organization.
Well! we are back. And we announced this return by organizing the most successful health camp in our history on Sunday, September 2015. We have brought much needed health services to rural West Bengal before, but never at this magnitude. Through the day we served just under 350 individuals. Six physicians including specialists in Cardiology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dental Surgery, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine spent the day serving those who have to travel large distances to get this level of sophisticated care. Uddyom volunteers, in bright yellow shirts, served everyone who sought help. Medication as prescribed by the physicians was distributed free of charge.
All this transpired in collaboration with the Friendship United Free Primary School in Khasmullick in South 24 Parganas. We are thankful to the local organizers, officials, and citizens for giving us this opportunity to create a partnership with the community. We are hopeful that this is the beginning of a very long term relationship. Here is to hoping for a better future.
